Begin with the publisher’s specification
A cover should be built for the exact book being produced. Trim size, binding, page count, paper type and bleed requirements affect the final dimensions. Do not reuse a calculator result from another edition without checking every input.

Understand front cover and full wrap
The front cover is one panel. A paperback full wrap normally contains the back cover, spine and front cover in one continuous file. Bleed may extend the background beyond the outside trim edges so minor cutting variation does not leave an unwanted white line.
Text, logos and important faces should remain inside safe areas. Do not place critical content directly beside the trim edge or spine fold.
Calculate the spine from real page data
Spine width is influenced by the number of pages and the thickness of the selected paper. Different printers and paper stocks can use different formulas. Hardcover construction also differs from an ordinary paperback.
Very thin books may not safely support readable spine text. Follow the publisher’s minimum-width guidance rather than forcing a title into an unsuitable space.
Prepare artwork for print
- Use high-resolution source images with permission for commercial use.
- Extend backgrounds through the required bleed.
